Brief Description
The Grand Canal Greenway is a recreational trail running along the banks of the Grand Canal in Kildare. The greenway runs for 39.5km from the Dublin border through Sallins, Robertstown and on to the Offaly Border. Fehily Timoney and Company Ltd acted as lead consultant for the project which included detailed design of several new pedestrian bridges, drainage works, earthworks, pavements, public lighting, road crossings, services and trail heads. For construction purposes the project was split into two phases with Phase 1 construction completed in 2023.
FT Responsibilities
FT’s role on the project included detailed design, tendering and construction supervision. FTs’ responsibilities also included:
- Acting as Project Supervisor for the Design Process
- Assessment of the existing route
- Geotechnical interpretation report
- Design of widening works to allow a 3.0m surface
- 118,500m² Surfacing
- Inspection and upgrades to existing canal bridges along the greenway route
- Design of four new pedestrian bridges and boardwalk structure
- Design of carpark and trail head facilities at Ardclough
- Part VIII planning for carpark and structures not included in original planning application
- Environmental studies for AA screening for Part VIII planning
- Drainage upgrade works
- Lighting Design
- Utility service location and protection works
- Undertook public procurement tendering process
