R688 Cashel Road, Clonmel
Sustainable Infrastructure
Brief Description
In April 2022, Fehily Timoney and Company (FT) were commissioned by Tipperary County Council to provide consultancy services for the design of improved cycle lanes and pedestrian facilities on the R688 Cashel Road in Clonmel. The R688 provides a link from the Ard Gaoithe Business Park, Clonmel Rugby Club and various housing estates to Clonmel town centre. The route contained a single cycle track leading out of town for 800m, which terminated 400m prior to the Ard Gaoithe Business Park. FT’s brief was to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists for a length of approximately 1.2km from the N24 roundabout to the Ard Gaoithe Business Park roundabout.
The improvement works included the addition of new raised cycle track along the eastern side of the R688 and the continuation of the existing cycle track on the western side to ensure full connectivity for cyclist. A cycle track was also extended along Heywood Road to connect to the Clonmel Rugby Club and the footpath network was extended and upgraded. New pedestrian crossings were included throughout the study area and 7 new bus stops were provided for a proposed bus route. The scheme included an upgrade to public lighting and additional drainage infrastructure.
