Bantry Relief Road
Sustainable Infrastructure
Brief Description
The proposed Bantry Relief Road (Phase 1) scheme is necessary to divert through traffic from the more constrained streets within the town of Bantry. The N71 to the east of the Town Centre Square experiences major congestion and the proposed relief road will help alleviate much of the through traffic. The road requires significant earthwork and involves 9 junctions to existing roads, future developments or farm accesses along the road. The scheme will require surface water drainage, fencing, road marking, signage, landscaping, public lighting, accommodation works.
The primary objective of the scheme is to provide a strategic transport link at the northeast side of the town of Bantry which will minimise traffic delays and congestion within the town and allow the movement of goods and services around the town. The project also includes active travel provision along its full length. It will also facilitate multimodal access to primary and secondary schools and Bantry General Hospital. In line with current and past development plans it will facilitate the development of zoned lands to the east of town. It will allow for the continued development of Bantry as a tourist town on the Wild Atlantic Way consistent with the County Development Plan.
