Limerick Greenway
Sustainable Infrastructure
Brief Description
The Limerick Greenway runs for 40km through West Limerick from Rathkeale to Abbeyfeale and on to the Kerry border. The Greenway runs along the route of the old Limerick to Tralee/Fenit rail line, which was constructed in the late 19th century. The rail line was closed between 1975 and 1978 and lay dormant until it was developed into the Great Southern Trail Greenway between 2008 and 2012 by a local nonprofit group. Between 2017-2023 Limerick City and County Council undertook a program of significant improvement works to the route, transforming the route into a high quality greenway linking the towns of Rathkeale, Ardagh, Newcastle West, Templeglantine and Abbeyfeale.
