Brief Description
The South Kerry Greenway involves the construction of a 27km greenway running from Caherciveen Town to the Trail Head in Glenbeigh Co. Kerry. Kerry County Council appointed Fehily Timoney and Company Ltd. in 2023 to deliver Section 2 (Ch. 18,200 to Ch. 25,650), Caherciveen Bridge, N70 Underpass and N70 Overbridge through TII Phases 5 Enabling and Procurement; Phase 6 Construction and Implementation; and Phase 7 Closeout and Review. The works contract will be carried out under the Public Works Contract for Civil Engineering Works designed by The Contractor (PW-CF4).
The proposed scheme is approximately 7.5km in length and comprises of a 3m wide paved cycleway with a minimum of 1m wide verge on each side, it will generally be constructed within the corridor of the abandoned railway line, where it exists. Section 2 is also known as The Mountain Stage of the greenway and includes several historic and new structures including the Gleensk Viaduct, the three Drung Hill tunnels, the new Nimmo’s Bridge and large gabion retaining walls adjacent to the N70.
FT Responsibilities
FT’s role on the project included preliminary design, tendering and construction supervision. FTs’ responsibilities also included:
- Acting as Project Supervisor for the Design Process
- Procurement of early works contracts including Topographical Surveys, Geotechnical Site Investigation, Structural Surveys, Site Clearance and Fencing
- Review of planning stage alignment and drainage design and development of Specimen Design proposals
- Structural assessment and development of specimen design proposals for Caherciveen Viaduct, a 11 span 280m long wrought iron structure over Valentia Estuary SAC
- Structural assessment and development of specimen design proposals for Gleensk Viaduct, a 11 span 200m long wrought iron structure over Gleensk River
- Structural assessment and development of specimen design proposals for Drung Hill Tunnels, three masonry lined tunnels through rock
- Structural assessment and development of specimen design proposals for existing bridges and retaining walls along the greenway route
- Development of specimen design proposals for Gabion Retaining Walls, Slope Stabilisation works, N70 Underpass, N70 Overbridge and three new greenway River Bridges
